A Name Rooted in Independence History
When we chose the name Gedney Bakery & Coffeehouse, we wanted it to mean something.
Our name pays tribute to the original Gedney Hotel & Opera House, once one of the most impressive landmarks in downtown Independence, Iowa. Although our bakery and coffeehouse is not located in the former hotel building, we are proud to carry forward a name with deep ties to our community and its history. The original Gedney stood just a block from where you'll find us today.
The Gedney Hotel & Opera House
The Gedney Hotel & Opera House opened in August 1892, during an exciting period of growth in Independence.
More than simply a place to stay, the Gedney was designed to make an impression. Its grand architecture, accommodations, gathering spaces, and opera house made it a destination for visitors and an important part of the social and cultural life of Independence.
At a time when downtown was bustling with businesses, travelers, entertainment, and activity, the Gedney helped tell the story of a community with big ambitions.
For decades, the building welcomed guests and provided a place for people to gather. The original Gedney eventually disappeared from the downtown landscape when the building was demolished in 1945, but its story remains part of Independence history.
Bringing the Gedney Name Forward
More than 130 years after the original Gedney opened its doors, the name has a new home in downtown Independence.
When we opened Gedney Bakery & Coffeehouse in 2024, we chose the name as a nod to the community's past while creating something distinctly our own.
Today's Gedney isn't a recreation of the former hotel or opera house. Instead, we hope to carry forward something less tangible: the idea of a downtown place where people come together.
Whether it's friends catching up over coffee, someone settling in with a book, coworkers meeting around a table, visitors discovering downtown Independence, or neighbors gathering for one of our special events, we love seeing our space filled with people and conversation.
A Gathering Place for Today
Our connection to Independence goes beyond our name.
We make our breads, pastries, cookies, muffins, scones and other bakery items from scratch in our kitchen, partner with other Iowa businesses for many of the products we serve, showcase local artists, host community events and look for opportunities to support the people and organizations that make our area special.
We're proud to be part of the next chapter of downtown Independence.
The Gedney name connects us to a fascinating piece of the community's past. What happens inside our doors today is about creating a place for the community now and for years to come.
